About this project

THE PROBLEM
When I joined the King's L&OD department to come in and fix the LMS system, I soon understood it was not just the LMS platform that needed addressing. There was a serious resourcing issue.
The learning content being loaded into the LMS was not interactive, looked dated and the learning experience was no different to looking at dull PowerPoint slides. This was because they had one of the LMS team administrators producing this content as part of his role. This individual had no interest in being an designer of any type and had no experience designing eLearning courses.
I believe the content and the learning experience going onto any LMS is so important because from a learner point of view, the LMS and the content go hand in hand. If either is bad then it will damage the overall learning experience.
I second member's administration time was also being split in half, on one side supporting users but on the flip side his time was being consumed running reports.
My vision was to create a digital learning team. The team would be responsible for three work streams; 1) LMS services & support, 2) eLearning content production, 3) Learning analytics.

THE SOLUTION
In the following months I shared my vision and put together the business case for redesigning the L&OD team to include a new digital learning team that would essentially run the LMS and design learning content as well as report out the analytics. This meant recruiting a digital designer & a data analyst leaving the two existing individuals to manage the LMS workstream.
Once the designer was onboard, I then set my sights on creating a in-house content production studio. This involved the tools of the trade for the designer for instance the latest authoring tools, access to asset stock, graphics tablets, video production gear and so on.
The LMS team that once was is now part of a Digital Learning Team at King's. The service has dragged King's into the 21st century modernising the way elearning content is put together using standardised processes. The project took many months to convince the organisation to such a big change and to make the investment. I also had to coach/mentor and train up the newly established team. I had the team attend external training courses to bring the skills up to par.
Time was also dedicated to educating our SME's and trainers on what is possible with digital learning.
The newly formed digital team has been a great success that I am really proud off. It's services are in such demand that now I'm having to make another business case to grow the team further

THE RESULT
-
The Digital Learning team is established and the team now have clearly defined roles and associated responsibilities
-
We have standardised processes and workflows
-
The quality of the team output has increased significantly
