About this project

THE PROBLEM

When I joined the organisation, I was immediately concerned by the standard of the online learning content being authored in-house for the following reasons:

  • Existing template was missing lots of standard componants you would expect to see in any elearning, so for instance, menu navigation, page counter/progress bar etc

  • It looked dated

  • Did not follow NHS brand guidelines

  • Was lacking interactivity and innovation

These factors were snowballing to contribute towards:

  • staff not being engaged by online learning

  • lack of motivation to use the LMS

  • low training compliance

THE SOLUTION

  1. I designed several new eLearning course templates for the trust to to use going forward. These templates:

    • follow the NHS branding guidelines

    • have much more added functionality

    • look visually more appealing and modern

    • inject more excitement

  2. I made a successful business case to recruit a designer who would take over the production of content authoring

  3. Worked with the new designer to come up with a standard list of new options that could be offered to any of our clients that aid interactivity and ultimately engagement.

  4. There has been and continues to be a education piece of work we do with our SME's and trainers to advise and collaborate with them on what's possible.

THE RESULT

  • The trust has begun it's shift from creating text heavy gloried PowerPoint decks to learning experiences.

  • Staff feedback have confirmed the newer courses being authored are visually much more stimulating and they now involve the learner more and get staff to interact much more which helps engage and helps knowledge to stick.

  • The person who was designing the older content is much happier. He is now able to dedicated his role entirely to LMS administration & support which is what he wanted in the first place.

  • The new designer has come in with fresh ideas and is helping to innovate the way we deisgn our learning experiences.

  • Compliance has increased through fault finding.
